Halloween calls for movie marathons! These are absolutely necessary to get you into the festive mode. You just have to start watching horror movies days before the Halloween night. #1. The Addams Family (1991)


The Addams Family is a movie based on the cartoon of the same name. If you have grown up watching that cartoon, you will love the movie too. It has horror and displays a love for macabre in a comical way, which will really catch the fancy of the goofy ones. Good for a weirdly fun family watch.

#2. It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)


The Peanut gang is all excited for Halloween celebrations when something atypical happens. When one of the friends was waiting for the Great Pumpkin, others go out for trick-or-treating. To see what happens, you should watch this movie. This edition was made especially for Halloween.

#3. Hocus Pocus (1993)

This one is a Halloween classic. Hocus Pocus is one movie that you cannot afford to miss on the Halloween night. A trio of mean witches, who are resurrected by a teenager, his younger sister and girlfriend, are wicked in every sense. Transforming people into animals is their favourite hobby. Young teens will love this one.

This is the story of twin sisters who belong to a parallel fantasy world with magic and were separated at birth. It is their journey of realising the truth about their powers and saving their world together. The essence of this movie is very Halloween-y.

#7. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)


Brad and Janet get stuck in front of a haunted place in November because of a flat tyre. What happens next is completely bizarre. There is a good dose of blood and gut, and some old school horror. The scary thing is that a criminologist narrates this story. It will give you the creeps.

Imagine what it would be like to discover a mummy in a dead man’s basement, which comes alive because of the moonlight. Do not worry because this mummy is friendly. The three kids who find him has to put him back into the coffin before the night of Halloween, but there is a trick in that too!

#9. Don’t Look Under The Bed (1999)

If you stop believing in your imaginary friend before time, they will turn into the Boogeyman, and start living under your bed. Yes, this is what happened with Frances and Darwin. It may be a Disney movie, but it comes with a warning. You will be scared to look under your bed.

#10. Ghostbusters (1984)

A trio of friends, who are also parapsychologists, decide to catch ghosts for a living by setting up an office in an unused fire station. They are later joined by a fourth ghostbuster. This movie received two Academy Award’s nominations, and that makes it a must-watch for Halloween. If not for that, watch it for Bill Murray!

Casper is everyone’s favourite friendly ghost! It is a good old movie, in which a paranormal therapist and his daughter move into a haunted mansion. Our cute little ghost, Casper becomes friends with the daughter and kind of falls for her too. This is an adorably ghostly movie.

#12. Ernest Scared Stupid (1991)

A stupid man, Ernest accidentally unleashes an army of trolls in a town. The leader of that army turns children into wooden dolls to feast upon. Ernest then, gathers an army of children to fight back with these trolls. This movie was meant to be modest in terms of horror, but is definitely not for children. Teens, and even adults can watch it.

#13. Tower Of Terror (1997)

The plot of the movie begins on the night of the Halloween, where five people board an elevator to go on the top floor of a hotel to attend a party. The elevator gets stuck and they all die. The plot moves 60 years into the future where some people try to free the spirits. This is a good movie by Disney with some real scary moments.

#14. Monster House (2006)

Monster House is an animated movie where three children discover that the opposite house has a woman’s soul entrapped in itself. It is the night of the Halloween, and these children help the woman’s husband to free her soul.

#15. Frankenweenie (2012)


A young Victor Frankenstein is a very intelligent boy, and everybody in town knows it. He loves his dog. Things take a turn when his father asks him to participate in things other than science, and he plays baseball. He hits a home run, and his dog runs for the ball and gets killed by a car. It is Victor Frankenstein’s dog after all, so you can imagine what will happen next!

#16. Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone (2001)

The magic of Harry Potter has cast a spell on pretty much the whole world. This one in particular is where it all started. The Halloween feast and the giant floating pumpkins in the entrance hall is a scene that captures the spirit of Halloween perfectly. The sound track and the general witchiness of the movie justify its presence in this list (not that anyone ever needs a reason to watch Harry Potter!)

This is a movie about a secret covenant of wizards, descended from ancient families. Even though itsy-bitsy spiders crawl all around, it is not a very scary movie. Nevertheless, it is a good Halloween watch. But, parental guidance is recommended.

It is about a gang of teenagers who are fascinated by monsters and are now in charge of saving the world from them. #21. Pet Sematary (1989)

The Creed family discovers that there is a hidden pet cemetery underneath their new home. When the family buries their dead cat there, they discover that whoever is buried there comes back to life, but in a changed manner. When their son dies, the father buries him there. This boy then, kills his mother and another woman and the chain continues. It is a spine-chilling horror movie!

#22. Orphan (2009)

A couple, who already has two children, bring home an orphan named Esther. She is welcomed in the family, but she turns out to be someone else. She tries to kill both the children and kills many more in the way. It is not a ghost film, or a supernatural horror. But, the twist at the end gets you every time!

#23. The Haunting Hour: Don’t Think About It (2007)

Cassie loves to trick people. On the day of Halloween, she comes across a bookstore whose seller sells her a book called ‘The Evil Thing’. This is handed to her with a warning that it must not be read out loud, and one must not think about the monster of the book. Cassie ignores both the warnings and it is Halloween night. You can imagine what happens next!

#24. Scream (1996)

Teenager Sidney Prescott becomes the target of a serial killer known as the Ghostface, and mayhem ensues. There is a lot of blood and slit throats all around in this movie. This franchise went on to generate two other equally gripping slasher thriller movies (the fourth one was not so gripping, but we know every Scream fan watched it nevertheless).

#25. Beetlejuice (1988)

This is a comedy horror flick about a ghost named Betelgeuse, who appears when you take his name thrice. The Maitlands die shortly after buying a new house in Connecticut, and become trapped inside as ghosts. When a new family arrives, they try to scare them off by hiring Betelgeuse, who is a ‘freelance bio-exorcist’; but he turns out to be too out-of-control and quite a menace. Watch this fun movie for some ghost on ghost haunting action, and a very awesome, young Winona Ryder.

#26. Raat (1992)


This film gets an honorary mention just for our Indian readers. We are sure this spooky film gave nightmares to every 90s kid, and adult at that time, and scared the bejesus out of everyone. Happy sleepless nights!
