Be it the brooding Mr. Rochester, the quiet yet charming Mr. Darcy, the lover boy Noah, the cute next-door neighbour Augustus Waters, or the ruthless Rhett Butler, we all have our fangirl moments.

We all have the guilty pleasures of reading these novels, and falling in love with the characters. It is because of these not-so-real characters that we all dream of having the perfect “fairytale romance” in our real lives.

The story is about two cancer-stricken patients, Augustus and Hazel, who get close to each other at their support group. This novel has a sad ending, but it is definitely a must-read.

This coming-of-age romantic novel is set in the American Civil War era. The hot-headed Scarlett O’Hara, and the fiery Rhett Butler are the main characters of this novel. Their love-hate relationship is the highlight of the story. Scarlett runs away from Rhett for the entire plot of the novel. And, when she realises her love for him, Rhett has had enough of Scarlett and decides to quit his marriage, thus leaving Scarlett heart-broken. It was hailed as one of the best romantic novels ever written in that era.

Another one of our favourite romantic novels is this one by Nicholas Sparks. Jamie and Landon are your regular high school students. Jamie is the daughter of the Church minister and Landon is the rich father’s son. While it may seem like the typical run-of-the-mill romantic novel, the way Landon falls in love with her, Jamie’s refusal of accepting the love, their special first kiss, and the way Landon fulfills her last wish of getting married, and being walked down the aisle by her father is truly a heart-wrenching moment.

While we are sure this novel comes as a surprise in this list of most romantic novels, but we have to give credit to Chetan Bhagat for this one novel written by him. It was based on his real-life love story. Krish and Ananya meet at IIM where they are pursuing their higher education. Krish is a Punjabi, while Ananya is a Tamilian. They meet, and fall in love. While they wish to get married, their families oppose this decision. Cross-cultural differences do not let their families accept their relationship. The story then progresses as to how Krish and Ananya try and make their families realise their true love for each other. It is a beautiful love story, and it gives them a happy ending. They get married to each other, and live together.
