Several Bollywood actors have at some point in their careers regretted their decision of not taking up a role offered to them first. In several cases, the film has gone on to become a massive hit leaving them lamenting about their not-so-clever choices.
Here are some of the most iconic movies that these Bollywood actors should have never rejected.

#1. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan – Troy
The former Miss World had left no stone unturned to display her talent. Not only Bollywood, but Ash is also a known face in Hollywood. Following her fame, she was offered the role of Briseis, against Hollywood’s biggest heartthrob, Brad Pitt in the Oscar-nominated war movie, Troy. Unbelievably, the Bachchan bahu declined the offer as she was uncomfortable with the demand of the role of being cosy with Pitt.
#2. Danny Denzongpa – Sholay
Despite being a negative character, Gabbar of Sholay has become legendary in Bollywood movies. Played by Amjad Khan, the role was initially offered to Danny Denzongpa. However, due to prior commitments with Feroz Khan, Danny had to turn down the offer, and Amjad Khan got the opportunity. And, he certainly nailed it!
#3. Twinkle Khanna – Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Karan Johar never shied from accepting that Twinkle Khanna was his favourite ever since his childhood. He was attached to her as a friend, and the name of the character Tina in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was inspired by her. In fact, he also asked Twinkle to play the role, but she declined the offer. And, as we all know, Rani Mukerji cashed in on the opportunity.
#4. SRK – Munna Bhai MBBS
Jadoo ki jhappi became quite a remedy, and solution from all kinds of heartbreak. The fad gained its popularity after Sanjay Dutt promoted it in the tapori style in the much-acclaimed movie Munna Bhai MBBS. Surprisingly, he was the not the first choice of Raju Hirani for the role, instead he was supposed to play the role of Zaheer, the character portrayed by Jimmy Shergill. However, after Shah Rukh Khan, who was the original choice for the character declined the film, the shift in roles took place.
#5. Armaan Kohli – Deewana
Bigg Boss Season 7 gained high ratings after Armaan Kohli made it a routine to exhibit his rage. Starting from getting cosy with Tanishaa Mukerji, to abusing his co-contestants in the show, Kohli tried his best to gain fame. He was last seen in the movie Dushman, (yes he did face the silver screen, and if you don’t believe it, Google)! Anyway, the scenario for the guy probably would have been different if he had not turned down Deewana, which eventually became the stepping stone to success for the King Khan, SRK. No wonder Kohli is in so much anger since then.
#6. SRK – Lagaan and Rang De Basanti
There were many claims to fame for King Khan. However, there could have been more accolades for him to win, only if he had not turned down some great roles like Bhuvan for the Oscar-nominated film, Lagaan and character of Flight Lt. Ajay Rathod in Rang De Basanti.
#7. Hrithik Roshan – Dil Chahta Hai
The movie Dil Chahta Hai brought a kind of revolution in Bollywood, and certainly amongst the youth. But just imagine, Hrithik Roshan playing the pranks with Preity Zinta instead of Aamir Khan! Yes, the role of Akash was initially offered to Hrithik Roshan. However, due to reasons best known to him, he rejected the offer, and missed out on the opportunity of being a part of this superhit movie.
#8. Saif Ali Khan – DDLJ
“Bade bade desho mein aesi choti choti batein hoti rehti he Senorita..” Wow! This dialogue from DDLJ would have certainly been one of its kinds if Saif Ali Khan, the first choice of the makers of the movie for Raj, had not declined the offer. But, it probably happened for the best that the role was later played by SRK, which made the movie and Shah Rukh Khan himself, a legend.

#9. Aamir Khan – Darr
“K..K..K..Kiran” not only gave shivers to Juhi Chawla in the movie Darr, but also gave Bollywood one of its biggest villains. Played by SRK, the role of this psychopath was initially offered to Aamir Khan, who rejected the offer after finding some faults in the narration.
#10. Kangana Ranaut – The Dirty Picture
“Entertainment, Entertainment and Entertainment” was all Vidya Balan gave us in the movie, The Dirty Picture. Sexy, seducing but talented, the role was well played by Balan. However, the role was initially offered to Kangana Ranaut who declined the offer, we do not know why.

#11. Aishwarya Rai – Raja Hindustani
One of the most iconic roles of Karisma Kapoor was Aarti in Raja Hindustani. However, she should thank Aishwarya Rai for this opportunity as she turned down the offer, which later fell in Karisma’s lap.
#12. Kareena Kapoor – Hum Dil Chuke Sanam
The movie is by far one of the best hits played by Aishwarya Rai. The character Nandini had been beautifully carved out for the former Miss World’s charm, beauty and talent. However, things would have certainly been different if it was played by Kareena Kapoor, who was the first choice for the character. She declined it to make her debut with Refugee. Only if she had known the future!

#13. Kajol – 3 Idiots
Kareena Kapoor grabbed another victory when she agreed to play Piya in 3 Idiots. However, before her, Raju Hirani had approached Kajol, whom he thought could do justice to the role. However, following some reasons, Kajol had to let go of the opportunity, which was well cashed in by Mrs. Kareena Kapoor Khan.
#14. Juhi Chawla – Dil Toh Pagal Hain
Juhi Chawla did not want to play second fiddle to Madhuri Dixit in the film, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, and so she turned down the offer to play the role of Nisha, which eventually went to Karisma Kapoor. Well, we are sure Nisha’s liveliness could have been played well by Juhi Chawla too, had she not turned down the role. Karisma eventually went on to win several awards for her portrayal of Nisha.
#15. Akshay Kumar – Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
The all-rounder, Farhan Akhtar induced reality when he played Milkha Singh in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. With his conviction power, intensity and acting talent, he was successful in moving the audience with the movie and the character. Things would probably have been different, if Akshay Kumar had not turned down the offer. Rejecting his first biopic, Kumar declined the offer citing date issues.
#16. Deepika Padukone – Furious 7
Hollywood missed another chance to cast one of the most famous Bollywood divas after Deepika Padukone turned down a mainstream role in Furious 7 due to her prior commitments for Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. But after its release, it seems more of Deepika’s loss than Hollywood’s.
#17. Priyanka Chopra – Immortals
Busy shuffling between India and USA, Priyanka Chopra has certainly never stopped in making India proud ever since she won the title of Miss World. Despite being a rising star in countries like USA, the former Miss World remained loyal to her country, and very own Bollywood. Hence, she did not hesitate once before declining a role in Immortals for 7 Khoon Maaf.
#18. Irfan Khan – Interstellar
Irfan Khan is right when he said he can do anything in the recent AIB video as rejecting a Christopher Nolan movie is not an easy thing to do. Owing to his dynamic acting skills, Irfan Khan has created a niche for himself in not only in Bollywood, but is also a known face in Hollywood. He proved his sincerity and commitment when he rejected Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar to complete The Lunchbox and D-Day.
#19. Salman Khan – Baazigar
SRK owes most of his present-day success to the character he played in Baazigar. For this, he should certainly thank Salman Khan, who had then rejected the role due to some reason. And, this is why Salman went on air to say, “If I had done Baazigar, there would be no Mannat today,” following his rivalry with SRK.
#20. Vivek Oberoi – Hum Tum
Remember Vivek Oberoi, who created a buzz with the movie Saathiya? Paired with Rani Mukerji, the duo was much appreciated by the audience and inspired the grapevine to spread the news of them dating each other. Inspired by the chemistry, Vivek Oberoi was later offered Hum Tum, which he declined. Not that he missed something really great, but who knows it would have turned out to be a hit owing the chemistry of the on-screen couple.
