Sonu Nigam’s Heart-Warming Song With India’s First Transgender Band Is Here And You Will Love It

March 8, 2016 — by Debiparna

The 6-Pack Band is India’s first transgender band. They created a social media ripple with their first music video, Hum Hain Happy, which was a rendition of Pharrell William’s super-hit number, Happy. This time they are back with their second video and first collaboration with singer, Sonu Nigam, with the song Sab Rab De Bande.

Y-Films, which is the youth wing of Yash Raj Films is behind the whole initiative. Watch the video here:

8 Important Things You Must Know Before You Order The Freedom 251 3G Smartphone

February 19, 2016 — by Debiparna

Freedom 251

Little is known about the man behind the much-hyped Freedom 251 smartphone that was launched yesterday. Director Mohit Goel hails from a family who has been running a three-decade old agriculture-related business based in the Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh, and the CEO of the company is his wife, Dhaarna Goel.

The device their company, Ringing Bells Pvt. Ltd. has launched, Freedom 251 is the cheapest smartphone in the world which runs on Lollipop (Android 5.1). People were not expecting much from a 3G enabled smartphone that only costs Rs. 251, when a standard 1 GB monthly 3G subscription costs more than the phone itself. But, does the phone even hold up to the much touted ‘Make in India’ tagline?

Read on to know what we know so far about this wonder phone:

Indian Defence Minister, Manohar Parrikar failed to show up at the launch event stating he had to attend a cabinet meeting. Senior BJP leader, Murli Manohar Joshi was present along with Director Mohit Goel, CEO Dhaarna Goel, and company President Ashok Chadha. The details that were given about the specifications of the phone at the launch event were vague. However, we know that the phone has a 4 inch display with 540×960 pixels resolution, 1.3 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB storage with expandable storage up to 32 GB, 1450mAh battery capacity (even though the actual samples have batteries that say 1500mAh), 3.2 megapixel rear camera, and a 0.3 megapixel front camera.

It has been claimed that the products the press received for review are not the ‘final products’. The devices the journalists received for review had peeling whitener/paint reveal the logo of the company,  Adcom. In fact, the phone looks and has very similar features to Adcom Ikon 4.

The Noida-based company that launched Freedom 251, is not a registered company at BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards), which means the product is not safe to use. And, this further begs the question if these devices are indeed repurposed Adcom Ikon 4 phones, which were launched two years ago. Not so much of a ‘Make in India’ proud moment of glory then.

Ringing Bells Pvt. Ltd. is not subsidised by the government, but Ashok Chadha said this to the press:

“By going for Made in India components, we can save on the 13.8 per cent, also we will be selling online first and thus save the costs incurred on large distribution networks.”

#4. Actual price

Freedom 251

People have been speculating how a smartphone can cost just Rs. 251. Company President, Ashok Chadha stated the original cost of the phone is Rs. 2500, and that the company is planning to balance things out by innovative marketing, economies of scale, reduction in duties and by creating a marketplace in the e-commerce sphere. But, according to a letter by ICA (Indian Cellular Association) to Telecom Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, the phone with similar features is estimated to cost somewhere around Rs. 4100.

#5. The website

The official website, many users have claimed is a hassle to use. It is ridden with bugs, and was brought down by a huge amount of traffic post-launch. People have had difficulty in purchasing the phone, some have even been able to order half a phone by entering the unit as 0.5 phones! But, let us chalk that up to initial stage glitches.

#6. Built and features

Be it the award winning and critically acclaimed show, Transparent, or timeless comedy shows like Seinfeld, Friends or indie favourites like the ever-hilarious Community or the spooky Supernatural. Take a look at the video here:

The video is so vibrant, yet so limiting in so many ways. As the Twitterati pointed out, it looked like the kids from Slumdog Millionaire went berserk throwing colours at each other.

While some others loved everything about this video- from Chris Martin, and dear Bey, to the ghats of Benaras, pole-balancing sadhus, and the two whole seconds of Sonam Kapoor too!

Some people have pointed out that there is a good deal of cultural appropriation going on in this video, while some others have stated it is a case of good old Orientalism. January 15, 2016 — by Debiparna

On the evening of January 14, 2016, the news of the death of British actor, legend, Alan Rickman broke on the Internet. It shocked the legions of fans of the Harry Potter universe, and it saddened a lot of hearts. Now, whenever someone asks a Potterhead a silly question, to which they can only respond with an, “Obviously,” just like dear Professor Snape used to say, the glee will be a little dimmer; it will be intermingled with the sorrow of loss. (READ: 10 Things You Will Regret Not Doing When You Turn Older)

January 12, 2016 — by Debiparna

Be it in case of natural calamities, or cases of any international crisis, social media has been connecting people who are in need of help and those who are more than willing to help them out. We live in a world where everyone is struggling to just get by comfortably enough. There are many who fall way below the minimum literacy requirements to get proper office jobs. But, we just assume the qualified ones at least find it easier to earn a livelihood of their choice. So, it was naturally shocking that this man from Lahore, who speaks English so fluently, and seems to be in complete control of his cognitive abilities, was homeless and unemployed.

There was an outpouring of messages once the video went viral. And soon enough, he landed a job! Amtech Systems, an IT solutions company tweeted that now he will not only have a job, but also warm accommodations to live in. And, Amtech Systems along with Ahsan Khan have launched a new initiative called ‘Employ Pakistani’ with more than 100 firms on board!

8 Most Memorable Roles Of Kalki Koechlin That Cast A Spell On Our Hearts

January 8, 2016 — by Debiparna

Kalki Koechlin, pronounced as Kalki ‘Kekla’, has been winning our hearts with her toothy smile, social activist spirit, and brilliant performances in Bollywood since 2009. She burst into the Indian movie scene as the modern day Chandramukhi aka Leni in Dev D. From the very start, Kalki made one thing clear- that she was not your regular glam queen. She has made unconventional choices in her movie roles as well as her life when she chose to go for a divorce with husband, Anurag Kashyap because she “did not want to pretend for other people.” (READ: 10 Bollywood Divas Who Are Ruling The Silver Screen Even After Marriage)

Kalki has been very vocal about being a feminist, she has spoken out about her own sexual abuse as a child, and done several things that have been nothing short of empowering; i.e., if we overlook her controversial endorsement of a certain beauty product that has been deemed ageist in nature.  She has starred in many roles that have impressed both the commercial-loving as well as the intellectual movie-goers. And, here we present to you some of her best performances on-screen.

#1. Dev D (2009)

Gif via Tumblr

Kalki plays the role of Leni, a victim of an MMS scandal, who later turns to prostituting for high-paying clients to pay for her education after being disowned by her family. This Anurag Kashyap film was critically acclaimed, and gained a lot of fan following for its innovative narrative  style, stylistic visuals and powerful performances by all the three leading actors, Abhay Deol, Mahi Gill, and Kalki herself. She won the Best Supporting Actress Filmfare Award for her performance.

#2. That Girl In Yellow Boots (2010)

Even though she was praised for Dev D, she remained unemployed for a year and a half before she starred in That Girl In Yellow Boots, which she co-wrote along with Anurag Kashyap, who also directed the film. The film dealt with dark issues like child abuse, prostitution, alienation, and was hailed for the way it was shot to provide the audience a sense of claustrophobia and extreme unease.

It is not just her roles, but her style also that has made us fall in love with Kalki. Learn the tips here: How To Wear Ear Cuffs Like A Celebrity

#3. Shaitan (2011)

Directed by Bejoy Nambiar, Shaitan, was a thriller that captured the fascination of the audiences. It is about a bunch of rich twenty-somethings, whose hedonistic way of living life comes to a crashing halt when one drunken night they accidentally kill someone. Kalki’s portrayal of a character bordering on mania, sometimes drug-induced, sometimes life-induced again gained her a lot of praise.

#4. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)

Gif via Tumblr

This Zoya Akhtar film was Kalki’s first foray into out and out commercial mainstream cinema. She played a less-than-likeable character in this coming-of-age saga starring big Bollywood names like Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol and Katrina Kaif. She rendered a certain complexity to her portrayal of a sensible turned jealous and possessive woman that actually made her seem more human.

#5. Shanghai (2012)

This Dibakar Bannerjee film questioned the way the system works, it raised an ostensible finger against establishment and authority. As film critic Anupama Chopra put it, “The Shanghai in the title isn’t a city. It’s a state of being, a metaphor, an aspirational fantasy.” Kalki’s character gets mired in the political murder of her professor Dr. Ahmadi, and the film follows the juggernaut that ensues in the fight between corruption and truth.

#6. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)

Gif via Tumblr

Another mainstream film directed by Ayan Mukerji had Kalki portray another coming-of-age role along with Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Aditya Roy Kapoor. Even though the main focus was on the lead pair of Ranbir-Deepika, Kalki managed to steal hearts with her performance. This was a strictly feel good movie, where everyone gets a happy ending, unlike Kalki’s most other films.

#7. Margarita, With A Straw (2014)

Image Courtesy: Margarita, With A Straw

Right after the commercially successful Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Kalki wowed the audience with a refreshingly honest performance in this Shonali Bose film. Disability is often misunderstood in our society, and sexuality is another misunderstood taboo topic. But, this film dealt with the topic of disability and sexuality with absolute finesse. Pointless to mention, Kalki’s  performance was superlative. This film, at the end of it all, was all about learning to love oneself, no matter how we are.

#8. The Printing Machine

Even if this is not a film, this powerful video deserves to be on a list that is about Kalki’s most memorable performances. In this captivating piece that Kalki made in collaboration with BLUSH, she performs a poem she wrote herself, called The Printing Machine.  It is an angry vituperation against our culture, which has gone so morally numb that no news is shocking enough for us to be permanently enraged. Her words and hypnotic rhythm will suck you into consuming each line she doles out about our obsession with juicy, controversial headlines, and our ultimate apathy to everything happening around us.

Kalki seems to have perfected the art of balancing between good commercial films, the gritty non-mainstream ones, and award-winning theatre with ease now. As she turns 32, we wish she continues to wow us with her performances and continues to empower us with her social activism.

7 Salman Khan Flicks Even Hardcore Bhai-Haters Will Enjoy

December 24, 2015 — by Debiparna

Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan (yup, that is his full name) is turning 50 on December 27, 2015, and he has been enthralling us with his brilliant performances ever since he acted in Biwi Ho To Aisi in 1988. According to IMDB he has 96 movies to his credit, and a proud Salman fan probably has seen them all. But truth be told, even a true-blue Bollywood buff might not be able to digest the Bhai phenomenon that Salman has ballooned into now.

Instead of spouting white-hot rage at his movies, a level-headed Bollywood-lover will enjoy some of Salman’s old gems. And, here they are:

This Lawrence D’Souza movie had some of the best and most memorable songs that came out of the 90s. S.P. Balasubramanyam, Kumar Sanu, Anuradha Paudwal, Alka Yagnik belted out beautiful songs like Dekha Hai Pehli Baar, Bahut Pyar Karte Hain, and so much more.

#2. Andaz Apna Apna (1994)

After Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) and Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), this was just the third film in which Salman appeared as Prem. This is significant because, the same way Shah Rukh is synonymous with the name Rahul, Salman is synonymous with the name Prem, as both played characters with these names plenty of times in many hit films. Raj Kumar Santoshi’s Andaz Apna Apna is one of the best out-and-out comedy films to come out of Bollywood, and has secured a cult status over time. This film gave us Aamir and Salman together, Crime Master Go-Go and several iconic dialogues we love to spout even now to earn street-cred.

If only he still made movies as funny as this, then we would not need his parodies to laugh at: You Will Laugh Your Guts Out At This Prem Ratan Dhan Payo Parody

#3. Karan Arjun (1995)

Gif via Tumblr

In this Rakesh Roshan film, involving rebirth, revenge and romance, Salman played the character of a reticent, angry young man perfectly. His eyes expressed the anguish of his character, and his reserved emotions were a perfect foil for Shah Rukh’s Arjun, who was more of the fun-loving, easy-going guy. Quite a role reversal for both of them if you compare the kind of roles both choose now, eh?

#4. Khamoshi: The Musical (1996)

This was the first Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed film that Salman featured in. Khamoshi was about a deaf and mute couple, played by Nana Patekar and Seema Biswas; their daughter played by Manisha Koirala falls in love with Salman’s character. Helen made a guest appearance as Koirala’s grandmother. Bahon Ke Darmiyan was a wonderfully melodious song that can keep lovelorn folks awake at night even today.

This was around the time when David Dhawan had found his hit formula- propel the story forward by involving twins, romance and a good dose of comedy. This one is a light-hearted comic caper where Salman plays the role of bachpan ke bichhre hue twin brothers.

#6. Phir Milenge (2004)

Even though Salman was not the lead in this film, he had a significant role in it. This was a sensitive movie where Shilpa Shetty’s HIV positive character faces discrimination at workplace and loses her job.

#7. Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)

This Kabir Khan movie surprised even dedicated Salman fans. It has came out at a time when Salman has already established his brand so firmly that his characters no longer have much individuality; he is the eponymous “Sallu Bhai” in most of his blockbuster films nowadays. So, he surprised all by playing a character that was quite different. He actually got beaten up good in this one, which is a welcome change from always turning others into pulp.

The hardcore romantics would enjoy Maine Pyar Kiya a lot, and we all know how many kids faced teary-eyed emotional atyachaar from parents who had a habit of watching Baghban on repeat. Good or bad, Salman’s movies always provide entertainment, whether you are a fan, or just a heathen non-believer who can mock every shot in any Salman Khan flick. So as Bhai turns 50, pick any movie from his illustrious list and enjoy with a bucket of popcorn, a translucent vest and middle-parted hair.

Watch How Shah Rukh Khan Trolled His Trolls In This Hilarious Dilwale Parody

December 21, 2015 — by Debiparna

dilwale gerua parody

Shah Rukh Khan can simply do no wrong in our eyes, even when he keeps gifting us brilliant movies like, Chennai Express, Happy New Year, and Dilwale. People have been laughing at the Dilwale song, Gerua from the moment its music video released. We will fess up; we have caught ourselves humming the catchy tune several times before berating our idle brains. But, when Shudh Desi Gaane came out with the parody of Gerua, we had to share it with you, because Shah Rukh himself is doing some good-hearted trolling in it, and we are absolutely loving it! We keep praying that our beloved stars stop churning out garbage movies in the name of entertainment, and that the fans stop paying hundreds of bucks to turn them into multi-million blockbusters. But, who has the time for such bagawat in a nation where actors and cricketers are put on the same pedestal as gods and goddesses? And, let us be honest, we would happily sit in stunned silence as we watch the brilliant show that is CID, just because Shah Rukh made a special appearance there to promote Dilwale.
